Memorial Brooch to Rear Admiral McKerlie, Died 12th Septr 1848. Aged 74 years, 1848
Rear Admiral John McKerlie (1774-1848) entered the Royal Navy as a volunteer in April 1794 having been at sea in the Atlantic and Baltic merchant service from a young age. Rated Able Seaman, he was sent from the receiving ship Royal William to join the elite frigate force based at Falmouth that cruised the Channel countering the activities of French commerce raiders. McKerlie was assigned to the frigate Arethusa (38) commanded by one of the most successful frigate captains of the day, Captain Sir Edward Pellew.
In early 1795 McKerlie followed Pellew into the 44-gun heavy frigate Indefatigable with the rate of Quarter-Gunner. Owing to a sound Scottish education and his knowledge of the sea McKerlie was soon acting as Indefatigable’s schoolmaster instructing the other eighteen ‘young gentleman’ of the gunroom in the specifics of their profession, having himself been appointed a midshipman. Throughout 1795 and 1796 he participated in the capture of the numerous French prizes which brought further fame and glory to Sir Edward Pellew. It was however early the next year that Indefatigable fought what is generally regarded as one of the boldest frigate actions of the French Revolutionary War.
On the dark and stormy night of 13 January 1797 the French 74 Droits de l’Homme was sighted off the Brittany coast. Pellew, recognizing that he was heavily outclassed, saw that the waves prevented his opponent from opening the lower gun ports and that the severe weather had caused the loss of the enemy’s topmasts. Seizing the initiative, Indefatigable closed followed by the frigate Amazon and raked the French ship of the line at every opportunity. The enemy replied with 4,000 canon balls over the next few hours until finally driven in to Audierne Bay irreparably damaged by British gunfire and the unabated gale. The sight of distant breakers however threatened the destruction of all three ships. Indefatigable, though with masts damaged and with four feet of water in her hold, alone just had time to alter course and escape.
For Pellew the action was a triumph, Lord Spencer at the Admiralty acknowledging that for two frigates to destroy a ship of the line was ‘an exploit which has not I believe ever before graced our naval Annals’. For McKerlie the action was a trauma, costing him his right arm and a severe wound to the thigh. McKerlie's sacrifice was deeply felt Sir Edward Pellew whom he followed to his subsequent command, the mutinous ship of the line Impetueux. While serving aboard the Impetueux, McKerlie participated in numerous boat actions during the Quiberon expedition in 1800, and was present during the planning of a proposed attack on Belleisle. Marshall’s Royal Naval Biography relates how McKerlie ‘…not having heard how he was to be employed, went up to Sir Edward, interrupted him in a conversation with Major-General Maitland, and asking what part he was to act in the event of a debarkation taking place? The answer was “McKerlie you have lost one hand already, and if you loose the other you will not have anything to wipe your backside with; you will remain on board with the first lieutenant and fight the ship as she is to engage an 8-gun battery.”’
The loss of an arm did little to impede McKerlie’s career. He was regarded as a talented surveyor and draftsman, working at onetime with the celebrated civil engineer Thomas Telford. He was also considered a first class shot. He received his lieutenant’s commission in 1804 and served in H.M.S. Spartiate at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. He was present in the capture of Flushing and the Walcheren expedition, and commanded a squadron of ships stationed off Heligoland; oversaw the defence and retreat from Cuxhaven; and was responsible for destroying enemy shipping on the Braak.
Unable to get a command after 1813, McKerlie returned to his native Galloway where he married, Harriet, daughter of James Stewart of Cairnsmuir, had one daughter, Lillias (1821-1915), to either or both of whom the present brooch no doubt belonged. In a post service career McKerlie served as a local magistrate and operated commercial vessels from the port of Garlieston. After almost twenty years ashore, he made an unlikely returned to the Royal Navy as captain of the experimental frigate Vernon between 1834 and 1837. He was awarded a Pension for Wounds on 8 May 1816.
Despite the ever growing kudos that was accorded to Trafalgar veterans in the early Victorian age, it is perhaps with greater pride that Admiral McKerlie recalled his service under Pellew (or Lord Exmouth, as he became); and in 1847 was one of only eight surviving veterans who had lived long enough to apply for the Naval General Service Medal with a clasp for the Droits de L’Homme engagement. The following year, in 1848, he died at Corvisel House, Newton Stewart, at the age of seventy-three.

{Location: Fogmorre Castle, Avon County, Kingdom of Wessex}
Head Mover: We should have everything moved into their proper rooms before your family arrives, ma'am.
Queen Anne II of Wessex: And Christian says that he couldn't find his back brace this morning. If you could have someone find the box that it's in and bring it into our dressing room. that would be most appreciated.
Head Mover: Not a problem, I'll get someone to check the list now to see where it is.
Anne II: I say. I’m impressed how quickly you’ve moved all of our belongings from Claremont House into Fogmorre Castle.
Head Mover: Thank you ma’am, my staff has been preparing for the move for awhile now. Though…
Head Mover: …(continued) and if I may ask ma'am, we were originally told to prepare two rooms for The Crown Prince and The Crown Princess. That is one for both of them and one for Prince Richard.
Anne II: (uncomfortable) Yes well.
Head Mover: But talking to the Crown Prince's team it sounds like their Royal Highnesses would prefer separate rooms.
Anne: … Yes, very well. Prepare the Tower Suite for William, it's already furnished nicely, and shouldn't need too much.
Staff: And Margaret, ma'am?
Anne II: Move any boxes or furniture from Claremont House marked B into the Double Suite for Margaret and Richard. We can move it after the weekend after All Saints Day.
Prince Arthur, The Earl of Falmouth: (off screen) There you are, your staff told me you were looking for me.
Anne II: Yes, its been a busy morning. I've been meaning to pop by.
Prince Arthur: No need for apologies, I can imagine everyone around here is keeping you on your toes (chuckles).
Anne II: I'm sure you heard about old Lord Poole.
Prince Arthur: It's such a shame having an old friend pass away. I figured you'd want someone from the family to represent you at the funeral? I'd of course be willing.
Anne II: That's very thoughtful. But I wanted to talk to you about the Order of the Royal Chrysanthemum. With his death a new spot has opened up, and since you are the Grand Master of the order, I'd figure I would talk to you first.
Prince Arthur: ...yes well. There are a few strong candidates in the National Council that are Peers. Though inducting someone involved in the sciences or Cancer research would be a way to honor Lord Poole.
Anne II: Well, actually I was thinking about nominating William to take Lord Poole's seat.
Prince Arthur: William, do you think he's ready?
Anne II: I'm not sure if ready is the word. He's seems so lost lately, it's as if he's lost his connection to the Crown. He needs something to reaffirm his sense of commit and purpose to the monarchy.
Prince Arthur: Well if he is meant to be Sovereign of the Order one day, I see no reason for government to deny his knighthood.
Anne II: Does that mean I have your support?
Prince Arthur: I think it's a wonderful idea. We can have a proper ceremony planned in about a month or two.
Anne II: What about sooner?
Prince Arthur: How soon?
Anne II: I'd want it done during the upcoming Devon Tour. We can convene the Order then. I can inform my staff to make all the necessary arrangements at Exeter Chapel.
Prince Arthur: All the same to me, if you're sure?
Anne II: More than anything.

BIOGRAPHY:
Clara was born as the child of Raya Ivanova and Boyan Ivanov, sister to Nikolay. Due to being a second born as well as a girl she wasn't considered as heir and truly, it was a blessing that she came to appreciate as she grew up. Her childhood was spent with the usual things; dance lessons, manner classes and all other things her parents expected her to eventually come to live up to. Her father, a supporter of the Dark Lord from the earliest rumors on and her mother in favor of purity made things rather clear.
It was around age six that she first sat on a broom and immediately fell in love with the feeling. It wasn't until years later that she realized that the feeling was something akin to freedom. Clara grew up, for the better part of her childhood and early teenage years as a bird in a gilded cage. Despite her future having been made rather clear to her from the beginning, the young witch did not let it deter her from a path of breaking out of her own shackles. If it came down to it, she would do whatever she would have to but until then she would keep fighting.
And fight she did. From the moment she sat foot into Durmstrange the young girl made sure to study hard, show her peers and those around her that there was more to her than simply a pretty head. The moment the chance offer itself she did join the quidditch team and from there on out it was like the doors and windows around her had opened. Not only was she skilled on a broom, the witch was incredibly talented when it came to the sport. Through it she received her ticket to a form of freedom, limited but very much of her own.
Upon graduation she joined the Vrasta Vultures. So long as her parents hadn't found a candidate and the career was booming Clara was off the hook of her parents' plans. Freedom, for now. And she truly thrived in the sport, eventually landing herself a nomination as player of the Bulgarian National team. Through the sport she thrived, made friends. One of which she followed all the way to England after he'd left; all in support after having been offered to play on two of the teams located within the area. Loyalty was a big thing. It came as a rather nice benefit then that the move became a form of freedom.
Recently her brother's arrived as well, pledged to the cause but also very much the one to watch over her in her parents' place. Luckily they do get along splendidly well.

what were the other slytherins' career meetings with slughorn like?
the way i had half of this typed out and then lost it 😔 we soldier on
most of the career meetings were pretty uneventful because most of the slytherins know exactly what they're doing - they're going to graduate and become full-time aristocrats. whether they're CONTENT with this is another matter - emma in particular is itching to go pro in quidditch, she just hasn't worked out her angle, and charlotte's considering a variety of masteries because she's uncomfortable with the idea of suddenly having No More School - but they were still uneventful
which leaves barty and lucinda!!!
barty's meeting was straightforward enough in that they talked about potential future careers using runes, slughorn told him babbling would be delighted to help him out with that since it is after all her field of study, and as far as the 'what newts you need to take' conversation, it was literally just 'make sure you get into newt runes. getting an o on the owl is a good idea. take some other classes too to be well-rounded on mastery applications, the traditional supplemental subjects are transfiguration and charms but runes are an inherently interdisciplinary field so you can basically get away with anything as long as you're decent at it and can sell them on it in your application'
lucinda, on the other hand, was basically vibrating out of her seat the entire time, stressed out of her mind at being The Only One in their year who really needs to Do Something Special to be successful in life. maeve has jokingly (she was dead serious) offered lucinda her own set of rooms in the bulstrodes' ancestral home, but lucinda hates the idea of just sitting around all day living off of her best friend So Much. So Fucking Much. so she needs a CAREER and she needs to be GOOD AT IT and her friends don't UNDERSTAND because they are SACRED TWENTY-EIGHT ARISTOCRATS WITH FORTUNES (and barty is. barty. he'd probably gladly live in maeve's house for the rest of his life and his only regret would be that it wasn't regulus's)
so slughorn had 4 totally straightforward very chill career meetings (regulus, maeve, barty, and evan), then BAM LUCINDA!!!!!!!, then 2 basically straightforward very chill career meetings (emma and charlotte)
emma hasn't really. Externalized her desire to become a professional quidditch player to anyone other than evan and like. geoff. house vanity isn't suuuuuuuuper conventional so it's not like it's hopeless (like - can you imagine regulus being like 'mother, father, i shall not become lord black, i am abdicating so that i can play seeker for the falmouth falcons'), but they're not... *un*conventional. emma's not the heir which gives her more freedom but she's also part of a family that is very much In the sacred twenty-eight, unlike, for example, the weasleys. so it would be pushing boundaries for her to become a pro athlete and mentioning it to slughorn would feel a little. embarrassingly optimistic to her
slughorn may be able to connect lucinda with someone at witch weekly, and if she plays her cards right, she could probably get an internship there the summer after her sixth year, which plays very well into both her love of accessorizing and her newfound interest in journalism as a viable profession (thanks geoff!! team dad all the way. even for people who aren't on the team yet)
charlotte can't decide which mastery she wants to pursue (first)

Castella came in at 10 and took breakfast. Stayed two hours. Had received a very interesting letter from his friend C. in Spain. Had seen M. de G. He is to call again on Friday. Many things proposed for consideration. Baron N. left word that he had called at the particular request of the sister of Sir W. Pulteney. This another inquiry about American laws. Left card at Baron Norton's. To Falieri’s. After essaying an hour, he determined to abandon this, his second work, and try again. Note : I have already paid him £30!! Returning, at Madame Duval’s, to thank her for the pretty manner in which the picture was sent home. She said rolling injured it, and she had procured a very handsome portfolio, made just to receive it ; an attention which very much pleased me. To Achaud's ; saw Madame only ; gave instructions about the letters they are to write to Portsmouth, Falmouth, and Liverpool, to secure the reception of T.. To Reeves’s, who prayed me to dine; engaged to return after dinner. Dinner chez nous B. seul. Koe enters at 6. At 7 went to Reeves’s. Gave him up his license. Claimed the privilege of a British subject as a birthright, which I had a right to resume, and gave him notice that I should go where I pleased. This violent measure, however, grew out of his suggestions. He promised to report the case to Lord Hawkesbury, who would probably refer it to the Attorney-General. R. is to communicate to me the result. Returned to tea. Read Thierry an hour with B. and K. Part at n. Wrote till 3. On returning home, called at Turnevelli’s, the statuary, and engaged to give him a sitting to-morrow at 11.
1 Theodosia, his daughter. He hoped she would join him in Europe.

Announcer: Presenting Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret of Lancaster, escorted by Her Royal Highness Maud, The Duchess of Huntington.
Charlotte Wentworth, The Duchess of Bristol: Your Royal Highnesses it is a pleasure to meet you. Maud, dear, and Margaret you look so lovely.
Princess Margaret of Lancaster: Thank you...I...
Charlotte: Sorry, you must be confused. I’m Charlotte, I know we haven’t met before. I’m William’s cousin.
Margaret: Nice to meet you. I recognize you from the photo cards, Lady Spencer prepared for me memorize.
Beatrice: Did she have you memorize them?
Margaret: No not her, but my mother.
(both erupting in laughter)
Margaret: Where is everyone? Has the Queen not arrived?
Beatrice: With the press here, it is all about formalities. The Royal Family will arrive in order of precedence with the Queen and the Earl of Gloucester arriving last.
Margaret: Aren't you entering with the rest of the family?
Beatrice: Well me and my siblings take our position from our father, so no royal titles and styles for us, formally I'm Lady Beatrice Wentworth.
Anne Spencer-Lewis, Countess Spencer: And one does not question the Queen's whereabouts so loudly in public.
Beatrice: There you are Lady Spencer, I trust that you've given Margaret a crash course.
Anne: The Princess did not need _ she does her duty well.
Announcer: Presenting, His Highness The Earl of Falmouth.
Beatrice: (whispering) ... my uncle, the Queen's first-cousin, he doesn’t come to court often, preferring to spend life in the country were he can pretend to be an artist.
Announcer: Presenting, Her Highness The Countess of Hyannis and His Lordship The Earl of Hyannis
Beatrice: ... My parents. Dad, or Lord Hyannis, sits on the Queen's privy council and mom is the Queen's first cousin. Dad thinks pretty highly of himself, even if the people don’t.
Anne: Beatrice honestly control yourself.
Margaret: You don’t think that much of your family, do you?
Beatrice: Sadly, it is they don’t think much of me either these days.
Announcer: Presenting, their Royal Highness The Duke and Duchess of Uxbridge
Beatrice: ...the Duke is her majesty's younger cousin, I’m sure you heard about his father, luckily Uxbridge isn’t anything like his father.
Announcer: Presenting, their Royal Highness The Crown Prince William of Wessex and The Prince George, The Duke of Chelsea
Beatrice: There he is...I heard they only gave George a dukedom because he threw such a fit at having to postpone his tour of Scotland because of all of the business with the wedding.
Anne: Ma'am this way, Lord Hyannis will introduce you to the Crown Prince. and ma'am if I may, I wouldn't divulge everything to lady Beatrice, she can be quite...conversational (chuckle)
Alexander, The Earl of Hyannis: Your Royal Highness, welcome to Wessex.
Margaret: Lord Hyannis it is a pleasure to see you again.
Alexander: Likewise, and Your Royal Highness, may I present....
Crown Prince William of Wessex: Princess Margaret of Lancaster. It is truly my pleasure, I'm sorry I could not be the first to welcome you to Wessex I was away at a last minute engagement.
Margaret: Your Royal Highness...I...
William: William...to you always William.
Margaret: William it is.
William: I hope in the coming days we could spend some time together.
Margaret: It will be nice to talk without everyone around.
William: Yes, and this is a small banquet, there will be more people to meet as the wedding gets closer. But I shouldn't worry to much.
Margaret: Why not?
William: Because they are all only looking at how stunning you are. Much like me.
Margaret: this is quite a banquet the Palace has planned.
William: Yes I think tonight will be something special. Dinner followed by music and dance. Do you dance?
Margaret: Yes of course, I do. Love to dance.
William: I look forward to finding out. Here, let me introduce you to my brother, George.
William: George, Margaret. Margaret, George.
The Prince George, The Duke of Chelsea: I'll have to wait to hug you until after the banquet, even with just two photographers protocol and all that chum must be followed. (chuckles)
George: Welcome to the family ... are you excited about tomorrow?
Margaret: Yes, the official engagement announcement.
Announcer: Presenting, Her Majesty, Queen Anne II of Wessex, The Duke of Devon and His Royal Highness The Prince Christian of Wessex, The Earl of Gloucester.

Wade in the Water by Tracy K. Smith
Tracy K. Smith, born April 16, 1972, in Falmouth, MA, is an American poet and educator. She served as the 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States from 2017 to 2019. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2011 for her book Life on Mars.
---
One of the women greeted me. I love you, she said. She didn't Know me, but I believed her, And a terrible new ache Rolled over in my chest, Like in a room where the drapes Have been swept back. I love you, I love you, as she continued Down the hall past other strangers, Each feeling pierced suddenly By pillars of heavy light. I love you, throughout The performance, in every Handclap, every stomp. I love you in the rusted iron Chains someone was made To drag until love let them be Unclasped and left empty In the center of the ring. I love you in the water Where they pretended to wade, Singing that old blood-deep song That dragged us to those banks And cast us in. I love you, The angles of it scraping at Each throat, shouldering past The swirling dust motes In those beams of light That whatever we now knew We could let ourselves feel, knew To climb. O Woods---O Dogs--- O Tree---O Gun---O Girl, run--- O Miraculous Many Gone--- O Lord---O Lord---O Lord--- Is this love the trouble you promised?
